The Great Lessons are one of the most memorable and unique parts of the Montessori elementary curriculum—stories designed to awaken imagination, curiosity, and wonder. Our Stained Glass Series celebrates each of these remarkable stories through original artwork created especially for the Montessori community.

The Fifth Great Lesson — The Story of Numbers explores humanity's remarkable journey toward understanding and expressing quantity.

Long before the numerals we recognize today, people needed ways to count, compare, measure, trade, build and understand the world around them. Across cultures and throughout history, humans developed increasingly sophisticated ways to represent quantity—eventually creating mathematical systems that could communicate ideas far beyond simple counting.

Our design brings that journey together through historical number forms, mathematical imagery and some instantly recognizable Montessori materials. Look closely and you'll discover familiar elements woven into the stained glass, connecting the long human story of mathematics with the hands-on experiences children encounter in Montessori classrooms today.

The Fifth Great Lesson reminds us that mathematics is more than numbers written on a page. It is a language humans developed to recognize patterns, describe relationships, solve problems and make sense of the world around us.

From counting what we could see to calculating what we could only imagine.

This design began as part of an original series of nearly three-foot-tall stained-glass panels we created for a local Montessori school. The finished glass artwork was handcrafted by a stained-glass artist and installed as a permanent part of the school's environment. We've adapted that original artwork into our Great Lessons apparel collection so Montessorians can carry these stories beyond the classroom.
